Highlights of US Open 11th day: Stephens beats Williams to reach final

Sloane Stephens stunned two-times US Open winner Venus Williams to ensure a new grand slam champion is crowned at the Flushing Meadows while Madison Keys hammered CoCo Vandeweghe to set up an all-American final. American Stephens won 6-1 0-6 7-5 in two hours and seven minutes but not before a mid-match scare where Williams, eyeing her third grand slam final this year, hit back fiercely.

The 24-year-old kept her composure in the decider, defending stoutly and stretching rallies in a bid to tire her opponent. Williams, who made 51 unforced errors, eventually faded out. "It was definitely well competed," Williams said after the match. "In the end, she ended up winning more points than I did. That's what it adds up to."

Keys took a far easier route to the final with a 6-1 6-2 victory in just 66 minutes. The American never let her opponent gain control, seizing the decisive breaks. She took a medical time out at 4-1 in the second set and returned to the Arthur Ashe Stadium court with a heavily taped right thigh. That did not slow her down as she sealed the win.
