New York-based Bangladeshi boxer Zinnat Ferdous clinched gold medal in the first Mandela African Boxing Cup held at Durban’s International Boxing Center in South Africa featuring countries from across the world.

In the final, Zinnat defeated Ethiopian boxer Gayiza Betelhem in two rounds from red corner to secure top place in the elite women 48-50kg light flyweight category.

The week-long international competition began on April 15 with 12 women’s and 13 men’s weight categories.

Zinnat’s triumph came in the seventh session on the concluding day representing Bangladesh instead of the USA.

Despite growing up in the United States, she decided to take part in boxing competitions as a Bangladeshi competitor.

She also represented Bangladesh at the Hangzhou Asian Games in China in September last year but was eliminated from the second round.

Zinnat also bagged gold in the Copa Independencia in Santiago, Dominican Republic earlier this year.

It was the first time Bangladesh took part in the competition.

The latest success in South Africa and Dominican Republic would boost Zinnat’s confidence ahead of the Olympics qualifying tournament in Thailand next month.

She has been enlisted among four Bangladeshi boxers, others being Salim Hossain, Abu Talha and Hossain Ali, who are going to take part in the Paris Olympics qualifiers.
