U-17 handball girls beat India to win IHF trophy

The home side won the hard-fought final 46-43 at Shaheed Captain M Mansur Ali National Handball Stadium

Bangladesh U-17 women's handball team handed India a narrow defeat to clinch the Bangabandhu Women's International Handball Federation Challenge Trophy in the youth section.

The home side won the hard-fought final 46-43 at Shaheed Captain M Mansur Ali National Handball Stadium in the capital Wednesday. 

With the victory, Bangladesh youth team took revenge for the defeat against the same opponents in the last match of group fixtures where they lost 43-33. 

The visitors were leading the final 16-10 in the 20th minute but captain Mosammat Marfi and Co responded quickly to level the margin 20-20 at half-time.

The second half offered more competitiveness as India were reduced to six after one of the players received a red card in the 44th minute.

Bangladesh's top scorer Marfi was also sent off in the 55th minute after receiving three yellow cards and her team were lagging behind but produced a remarkable comeback afterwards to win the game.

Marfi scored 15 goals while Runa Laila and Tania added 14 and 10 goals respectively.

India's Renuka scored 16 goals.

They earlier opened their campaign with a commanding 48-10 victory against the Maldives before crushing Nepal 50-4.

The U-19 national team are also scheduled to face India in the final of the junior section at the same venue Wednesday.
