Bangladeah ran riot on the second day of the Youth Olympic Hockey Qualifiers in Bangkok, Thailand Thursday as they thrashed Cambodia 20-0 with Mohammad Alam scoring a whopping seven goals. Rokibul Hasan (four), Sarwar Shaon (three), Prince Samundo and Mohammad Uddin (two each) and Mohammad Mohsin and Mohammad Mehedi (one each) were also on the scoresheet.
The youngsters in red and green however, lost 7-4 to Malaysia in their second game of the day at the same venue to drop to third position in the Pool B points table. Bangladesh have six points from three matches and trail table-topper Malaysia by three points and second placed Pakistan by a single point.
Chinese Taipei, Singapore and Cambodia are fourth, fifth and sixth respectively with four, zero and nought points accordingly. Bangladesh youth earlier began their campaign with a 10-4 win over Singapore Wednesday.Bangladesh are targeting one of two berths in the final round of the Youth Olympic Hockey, scheduled to be hosted by Buenos Aires in October this year. Bangladesh youth, coached by Gobinathan Krishnamurthy, will face Chinese Taipei and Pakistan Friday.
Alam and Shaon will be looking to continue their goal-scoring spree Friday after scoring 10 and seven goals respectively in their first three games. Alam is the joint highest scorer of the Qualifiers while Shaon is the joint fourth in the list.
The nine-member Bangladesh team left Dhaka for Thailand Tuesday. The tournament is being held in accordance with the five-a-side format.All the nine players are students of BKSP, among which six participated at the recently concluded Club Cup Tournament. Sohanur Sabuj, Mohsin and Mehedi played for Abahani, Shishir and Shaon represented Mariner Youngs Club while Rokib featured for Victoria Sporting Club.
The players also prepared for their HSC exams simultaneously.
