Asia Cup Hockey: 80-page programme book with no portrait of coach, player

Update : 24 Oct 2017, 11:28 AM
The Bangladesh Hockey Federation published an 80-page programme book, a souvenir of the Hero Asia Cup 2017, with no portrait of any player or coach from the eight participating teams. There are however, portraits of each of the 30 members of hockey’s governing body in Bangladesh. A total of eight pages of the programme book were allocated for the 22 different sub-committees of the tournament, including more than 200 names. To add to that, some of the names were mentioned twice or even more. Three pages contain the names and portraits of each member of the BHF and the publication committee while four pages have the names and posts of 36 members of the event’s organising committee. Only two pages were allotted for each participating side, one with the list of squad members and officials while the other comprises three pictures of the respective team.

The book contains only two articles filling six pages. "The booklet has been developed considering the requirements of both AHF (Asian Hockey Federation) and the BHF," wrote the chairman of the publication committee, Wing Commander Mohammad Rafiul Huq, in the editorial page of the programme book. According to a member of the publication committee, who also happens to be the co-editor of the book, there were certain restrictions from the AHF not to use close pictures of the players. "The AHF made it mandatory for us not to use close or individual images of the players and coaches. They also barred us from using pictures of our choices. We had no other option but to choose pictures from a link they gave us," said co-editor, SM Abdus Shakur to Dhaka Tribune Monday. He informed that there were no restrictions from the AHF to use the pictures of the BHF and tournament officials. Shakur also said they got very short time to prepare the book and followed the programme book of the Asian Games Qualifiers Dhaka 2014 as the standard.

Rafiul, also an editor of the book, wrote in his editorial, "It holds relevant information which will serve as the record book for Bangladesh hockey over a long period of time." The book however, doesn't have any statistics or even the roll of honour of the previous eight editions. There is information of only the 1985 Asia Cup when Dhaka hosted it for the first time in history. In the gallery, six pages were allocated for 12 images of logo-unveiling and the Memorandum of Understanding signing ceremony, cheque handover and jersey-unveiling while eight pictures were used in only two pages for the U-18 Asia Cup, hosted by Dhaka last year. Meanwhile, three pages were allocated for the list of national award recipients, former presidents and general secretaries of BHF since 1972, which also drew unwanted interest.
