The World Cup continued to deliver memorable moments as several players announced themselves on football's grandest stage with decisive contributions for their countries.
From Hwang In-beom's moment of magic for Korea Republic to Julian Quinones' dream World Cup debut for Mexico, the latest round of matches produced heroes capable of shaping their nations' campaigns.
Hwang produces a moment of class
When Korea Republic needed inspiration against Czechia in Guadalajara, Hwang In-beom answered the call with a touch of brilliance befitting the World Cup stage.
The Feyenoord midfielder orchestrated Korea's comeback in a 2-1 victory after Ladislav Krejci's towering header had put Czechia ahead in the 59th minute. Eight minutes later, Hwang produced the game's defining moment.
Latching onto Lee Kang-in's sublime through ball, Hwang glided past two defenders with elegant footwork and a clever change of direction before delicately lifting the ball over goalkeeper Matej Kovar with an exquisite chipped finish.
It was a finish that combined composure, technique and imagination – exactly the kind of goal that becomes part of World Cup folklore.
Hwang was not finished there. With Korea pushing for victory, he turned provider in the 80th minute, delivering a low cross from the right that substitute Oh Hyeon-gyu converted to complete the turnaround with a brilliant finish.
The midfielder's influence extended beyond statistics. His creativity and leadership helped Korea secure a third consecutive World Cup victory over European opposition following previous wins against Germany in 2018 and Portugal in 2022.
Julian Quinones enjoys a dream start with Mexico
Few players could have imagined a more perfect introduction to World Cup football than Julian Quinones experienced in front of a passionate home crowd at Mexico City Stadium.
The Mexico forward opened the scoring in the ninth minute of a commanding 2-0 victory over South Africa, capitalising after Erik Lira dispossessed Sphephelo Sithole before drilling his effort through the legs of goalkeeper Ronwen Williams.

The goal settled nerves among the hosts, but Quinones was far from done. The 28-year-old continued to torment the South African defence throughout the contest, striking the post before turning creator for Mexico's second goal.
After combining cleverly with Raul Jimenez, Quinones fed Roberto Alvarado, whose pinpoint cross was met by Jimenez at the back post to seal victory.
"I’m happy and excited to score my first World Cup goal, in such a spectacular stadium with amazing fans. It's important for me to acknowledge what my team-mates did to secure the first three points," Quinones said.
"We've felt the support of the fans these past few days. We're united and today it really showed."
His performance embodied Mexico's energetic and aggressive approach under Javier Aguirre and underlined why El Tri could emerge as dangerous opponents on home soil.
Raul Jimenez delivers when Mexico needed him
While Quinones stole many of the headlines, Raul Jimenez demonstrated why experience remains invaluable at major tournaments.
The veteran striker had threatened from the opening minutes, forcing Williams into an early save and later seeing a header denied. He remained patient despite South Africa's resistance and eventually earned his reward in the 67th minute.
Moments after South Africa were reduced to ten men following Sithole's dismissal, Jimenez found space at the far post to head home Alvarado's inviting cross.
The goal highlighted the striker's predatory instincts and aerial prowess, providing Mexico with the cushion they needed to secure all three points.
Alvarado revealed the understanding between the pair had been forged during the interval.
"I'm happy that Raul was able to score that goal. At half-time, he told me to send in a cross for him. I didn't think twice, and I knew that in that area it could be dangerous. Thank God I got the assist and Raul was able to score that goal," the winger said.
As the World Cup gathers momentum, the opening rounds often produce players who capture the imagination. On this occasion, Hwang's elegance, Quinones' explosive debut, Krejci's stunning header, Oh and Jimenez's clinical finishing ensured their names dominated the conversation.
