The road to glory begins today

Stars, spectacle and history await at football’s biggest World Cup

Update : 11 Jun 2026, 12:00 AM

The wait is over.

From the football-mad streets of Buenos Aires and Dhaka to the packed stadiums of North America, the 2026 Fifa World Cup kicks off today, launching the biggest and most ambitious edition of the tournament in its 96-year history.

For the first time, the World Cup will be hosted by three nations -- the United States, Canada and Mexico -- and feature an expanded 48-team field, transforming football's most celebrated event into a month-long global spectacle spanning an entire continent.

The tournament opens in Mexico City, where hosts Mexico face South Africa in front of an expected capacity crowd at the iconic Estadio Azteca, the first stadium to host World Cup opening matches in three different editions.

Fifa President Gianni Infantino has described the tournament as the "greatest show on Earth," and the numbers reflect that ambition.

With 48 teams, 104 matches and 16 host cities across three countries, World Cup 2026 is set to break records for attendance, viewership and commercial revenue.

Yet beyond the scale and spectacle, the tournament arrives with compelling storylines.

Much of the spotlight will fall on football's two defining icons -- Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.

At 39 and 41 respectively, the tournament is widely expected to be the final World Cup appearance for both men, bringing an era that shaped modern football closer to its conclusion.

A new generation, however, is ready to take centre stage.

France's Kylian Mbappé, England's Jude Bellingham and Spain's teenage sensation Lamine Yamal are among the stars expected to define the future of the sport.

The expanded format has also opened the door to new footballing nations.

Jordan, Uzbekistan, Cape Verde and Curaçao will all make historic World Cup debuts, reflecting Fifa's effort to broaden the game's global reach.

Before the football begins, opening ceremonies will be held across the three host countries, celebrating their cultures while showcasing a shared message of unity through sport.

For billions of fans around the world, however, the focus remains on what unfolds on the pitch over the next month.

A new champion will emerge. Legends may make their final bow. New stars will be born.

And once again, the world will stop to watch football.
