Bangladesh suffered a 3-0 defeat to Vietnam in an international friendly at the National Stadium in Hanoi on Thursday, exposing defensive frailties and raising concerns ahead of the upcoming AFC Asian Cup qualifier against Singapore.
Ranked 181st in the FIFA standings, Bangladesh faced a stern test against 103rd-ranked Vietnam — a side 78 places above them. Unlike their recent friendlies against Nepal, Maldives and Bhutan over the past two years, this match provided a rare opportunity to measure themselves against stronger opposition.
Vietnam seized control early, capitalising on Bangladesh’s vulnerability in set-piece situations. The hosts opened the scoring in the eighth minute when Pham Tuan Hai’s effort, following a lobbed delivery, took a deflection off Zayyan Ahmed before finding the net.
The lead was doubled in the 18th minute. From a corner, a curling ball into the box was met by Do Duy Manh, who headed home to leave goalkeeper Mehedi Hasan Srabon with little chance. Bangladesh’s defensive organisation appeared shaky, particularly in dealing with aerial balls.
Bangladesh showed brief signs of resistance around the half-hour mark. Faysal Ahmed Fahim forced a save while Sohel Rana fired narrowly off target. Srabon also denied Nguyen Hai Long with a fine stop in the 31st minute, offering a glimmer of hope.
However, that hope was short-lived. In the 38th minute, Nguyen Hai Long struck again, cutting inside and finishing clinically into the bottom corner despite efforts from Tariq Kazi and Fahamedul Islam to close him down, giving Vietnam a commanding 3-0 lead before halftime.
Head coach Javier Cabrera’s side struggled to regain composure after the break. Although the formation shifted more defensively to prevent further damage, Bangladesh failed to create clear-cut chances. Hamza Choudhury, deployed in a more advanced role, endured a difficult outing and could not influence the game as expected.
Historically, Bangladesh have never beaten Vietnam in men’s football, and this result continued that trend.
With the Asian Cup qualifying fixture against Singapore scheduled for March 31, Bangladesh must quickly regroup. While progression to the main tournament is no longer possible, restoring confidence and defensive discipline will be crucial in their final outing of the campaign.
