Tigresses face Uzbekistan in must-win Asian Cup clash

Bangladesh head coach Peter Butler expects a challenging contest against Uzbekistan but remains confident in his team’s preparation and approach

Bangladesh will leave nothing on the table when they take on Uzbekistan in their final Group B match of the AFC Women’s Asian Cup 2026 at Perth Rectangular Stadium on Monday.

The Tigresses’ hopes of progressing to the next round hang by a thread after back-to-back defeats in their opening two matches. However, a victory against Uzbekistan could still give the debutants a fighting chance of advancing as one of the tournament’s two best third-placed teams.

Bangladesh showed promise in their opening game, holding defending champions China PR to a respectable 2-0 defeat, but their inexperience at the continental stage was exposed in the second match as they went down 5-0 to three-time champions DPR Korea.

Head coach Peter Butler admitted the heavy loss was a wake-up call for his young side but believes the experience will help them grow.

“Looking back at the game against DPR Korea, it was a bit of a rude awakening for us, but in a positive sense,” Butler said at the pre-match press conference on Sunday. “We've had some good moments, and I think the game's all about good moments.”

Butler expects a challenging contest against Uzbekistan but remains confident in his team’s preparation and approach.

“I know full well it’ll be a tough game depending on how they set up and go about it. Will they play in a low block and be defensive, or will they come out and press? I know what we’ll do,” he said.

The English coach emphasised that Bangladesh, with an average age of just 19, are still learning but will enter the decisive encounter with optimism.

“Hopefully the preparation we’ve done will put us in good stead. Every day is a learning day and every day is part of the learning curve for this team,” Butler said. “This match could be a bit of a cat-and-mouse affair. Both teams might start cautiously, but we’re not a team that likes to sit back – that’s not our style. We prefer to play on the front foot.”

Uzbekistan are also without a point in the group after suffering identical 3-0 defeats against China PR and DPR Korea.

Their head coach Kotryna Kulbyte acknowledged the importance of Monday’s clash and expects a determined Bangladesh side.

“This game will be decisive both for us and our opponents,” said Kulbyte. “We know it won’t be easy. Bangladesh are determined, dynamic and very quick.”

The Lithuanian tactician added that her side is preparing seriously for the contest and will approach the match with an attacking mindset.

“We have 26 players who are ready to step onto the pitch. This is a tournament game, so replacements are always part of the plan. Everyone is preparing fully for tomorrow’s match,” she said.

With both teams seeking their first points of the tournament, Monday’s encounter promises to be a crucial battle as Bangladesh chase a historic result in their debut Asian Cup campaign.
