In a Federation Cup final for the ages, Mohammedan Sporting Club Limited prevailed against arch-rivals Abahani Limited 4-2 in the penalty shootout to end their long 14-year wait for the title of Bangladesh's premier cup competition.
Tuesday's grand finale at Shaheed Dhirendranath Dutta Stadium in Comilla rolled into the tiebreaker as the exciting encounter ended 3-3 after the regulation 90 minutes, and 4-4 following extra time.
Souleymane Diabate, who scored all four goals for the Black and Whites, Alamgir Kabir Rana, Roger and Kamrul successfully converted their spot-kicks while Emeka Ogbugh and Yousef Mohammad scored theirs for the Sky Blues.
Shahriar Emon missed his penalty for Mohammedan, while Raphael Augusto and Daniel Colindres fluffed their spot-kicks for Abahani.
Mohammedan, who now have 11 Federation Cup titles, one less than Abahani, replicated their 2009 triumph when they had also won in the tie-breaker against the same opposition.
In a topsy-turvy encounter, the Sky Blues took a 2-0 lead into the first half interval before the Black and Whites came back strong, making it all-square at 2-2.
Abahani again went ahead before Mohammedan brought parity to take the game into extra time.
Mohammedan made it 4-3 in extra time before Abahani equalized as the match went into the lottery of penalties where the former had the last laugh.
