Bangladesh managed a hard-fought solitary goal victory over India in their third match of the Saff U-17 Women's Championship Friday at Bir Shreshtha Shaheed Sepoy Mohammad Mostafa Kamal Stadium in Kamalapur.
With the day's victory, Bangladesh stay on course for the championship with six points from three matches, while India remained at their previous collection of three points, having played a game less than Bangladesh, reports BSS.
Table-toppers Russia are in a comfortable position at the moment with six points from two outings.
Bangladesh will now play their last match of the regional age-level competition against Nepal, scheduled to be held this Tuesday at the same venue.
On the other hand, it was not all over yet for India as they still have two matches left.
India will play their third game against Bhutan this Sunday before meeting Russia in their last tie two days later.
In the first half, both teams launched some attacks and counter attacks, but failed to convert any of those into a goal.
After resumption, whilst the two teams were desperately trying to break the deadlock, Bangladesh's best moment came in the 74th minute through a suicidal own goal.
Ahila Rajan made the hara-kiri as she wanted to foil an attempt of Bangladesh with a header from the goal-mouth melee, but the ball mistakenly went inside their own net.
India grafted hard to stage a fight back, creating some scoring chances, but failed to provide the finishing touch in the remaining proceedings and had to leave the field empty handed.
Bangladesh, placed 140th in the Fifa ranking, earlier thrashed unfancied Bhutan 8-1 in their tournament opener.
The home side then suffered a setback, going down to a 3-0 loss against Russia.
India, the strongest team in the region ranked 61st and also a tournament favorite, earlier defeated defending champions Nepal 4-1, riding on a brilliant hat-trick by forward Shilji Shaji.
