Former national footballer Badal Roy has been diagnosed with stage four liver cancer, which has spread to other parts of his body, making him critically ill and with little hope of surviving for a long time.

The national award winning athlete is currently admitted at the Intensive Care Unit of Square Hospital where his liver cancer was identified Sunday, informed his family member.

“Cancer has spread. None of us is much hopeful. Doctor also said so. What my father now needs is supporting treatments like dialysis, oxygen, controling diabetes,” said Badal’s daughter Bristy Roy over phone.

“Kidney is not also working because of liver. We are trying to shift him to the ICU of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University within one or two days,” she added.

Badal was admitted at the capital’s Asghar Ali Hospital on November 5 before being moved to Square Hospital last Wednesday, and transferred to ICU from HDU a day later.

He has long been facing serious health issues, especially in the last two years.

Badal Roy, former star midfielder and Bangladesh Football Federation vice president, is currently recovering after testing positive for the novel coronavirus.

He survived after brain haemorrhage following a couple of successful surgeries at Gleneagles Hospital and Medical Center in Singapore in 2017.

He also battled Covid-19 infection in August this year.

Badal was a star midfielder in the 1980s.

He played and managed Mohammedan Sporting Club Limited and played a vital role in reorganizing the traditional outfit when its governing body faced serious crisis from casino scandal last year.

He also served as vice-president of Bangladesh Football Federation for three times since 2008 and ran for president post against Kazi Salahuddin during the previous election.
