Bengal Tigers face high-flying Jordan today

Update : 23 Mar 2016, 07:30 PM

Bangladesh will take on Jordan today in their final Group B match of the 2018 Fifa World Cup second round qualifiers at Amman International Stadium. The match kicks off at 6:30pm (Bangladesh standard time).

The Bengal Tigers, who have already been eliminated from the race to qualify for the third round, did not enjoy the best of experiences against Jordan at home on September 8 last year where the men in red and green conceded a 4-0 loss. It was the first time Bangladesh faced the Arab nation.

Bangladesh, currently guided by temporary Spanish coach Gonzalo Sanchez Moreno, will be without captain Mamunul Islam and winger Zahid Hossain who were recently banned due to disciplinary reasons.

Moreno’s charges reached the Jordanian capital Amman last Monday after a four-day stay in Dubai where they contested a Fifa international friendly against the United Arab Emirates at Zayed Sports City Stadium in Abu Dhabi.

Jordan, known as “The Chivalrous”, are competing for a place in the next round along with Asian champions Australia. In their bid to qualify for the third round, the Jordanians received a boost a few days ago when former Tottenham Hotspur, QPR and Portsmouth manager Harry Redknapp took charge for their last two matches of the second round qualifiers.

The Socceroos are currently at the summit of Group B with 15 points from six matches while Jordan are second with 13 points so the Bangladesh tie is a must-win game for The Chivalrous. Australia will also face Tajikistan today at Adelaide Oval.

The Bengal Tigers, meanwhile, are at the bottom of the group with only one point from seven matches. Their solitary point came at home against Tajikistan in a 1-1 draw at Bangabandhu National Stadium on June 16 last year.
