Fazlur Rahman Arzoo, the former legendary footballer and first ever captain of Dhaka Mohammedan Club in the 1950s, has passed away due to old-age complicacies at his residence in Chittagong yesterday. He was 89.
The national award winning footballer was one of the most decorated names in the Dhaka football arena and was a regular fixture in the East Pakistan football side. He was also one among very few players from Bangladesh to have played for the Pakistan football team.
Arzoo, whose preferred playing position was in and around the right wing, began his Dhaka league career for Wari Club in 1951 before plying his trade for Wanderers Club from 1953-55. Arzoo then joined Dhaka Mohammedan and stayed there for three seasons. Arzoo also played in one of the oldest tournaments in the world – the IFA Shield in Kolkata for both Wari and Wanderers.
After hanging up his boots in 1958, Arzoo played a key role in developing the game as an organiser. Following the liberation war, he worked tirelessly for the Bangladesh Sports Control Board.
He also coached BKSP, Chittagong Army and Navy teams. He was awarded with the national award in 1979 for his contribution in sports.
