Scotland skipper Preston Mommsen eyes to upset Bangladesh and along the way achieve their first ever win against a Test nation when the sides meet in their World Cup Pool A game at the Saxton Oval in Nelson tomorrow.
“Its huge for us as Scotland has never beaten a full member nation so this gives us another big opportunity to win the game. That’s a huge goal for the Scotland team to get that first win against a full member nation so its a very important fixture for us. A win could do a huge amount for our team and cricket back home in Scotland and for all our supporters,” said Mommsen.
The Scottish think tank roped in Bangladesh’s former coach Shane Jurgensen as their consultant only for this “crucial” encounter. “Its nice to have someone (with us) who is experienced working with the Bangladeshi players. Obviously he gives us some good insights and good information on the players and hopefully he could point us some weakness in the line so we can exploit. I think its a clever move from us to bring him in the camp for the next few days and we all are looking forward to working with him,” said the captain.
The sides last met in a Twenty20 match in 2012 where Bangladesh lost by 34 runs and the Scottish captain believes being an unknown side to the Tigers is an added advantage.
However, the 27-year old is well aware of the threat possessed by Shakib al Hasan and the spin unit and it isn’t any surprise that they are planning a way to keep the danger away.
The Scotland side were very close to a win against Afghanistan in their previous match before while they also gave a tough time to the hosts New Zealand. Mommsen wants to fight till the 100th over of the match against Bangladesh and expects Matt Machan, Richie Berrington and Kyle Coetzer contribute with the bat while Josh Davey to shine with the new ball.
