BCB tilts toward split captaincy

Update : 25 Sep 2014, 07:45 PM

Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) president Nazmul Hasan is eager to implement their new strategy of “split captaincy” in the upcoming home series against Zimbabwe in October.

Following the poor run in 2014 so far, the BCB chief informed the board is likely to opt for different captains for different formats. If the plan sees light it will be the first time that Bangladesh cricket will experience different captains across the three formats. However, the theory will be implemented only if the board directors agree to the proposal in the board meeting scheduled for September 30.

“If we get the green signal from the board meeting, we’ll apply the theory of split captaincy for the Test and ODI series against Zimbabwe,” said Nazmul at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium yesterday.

Nazmul further informed that the board will implement the theory on experimental basis at the initial stages. “After seeing the results, we’ll take the final decision regarding the split captaincy in the next year ahead of the World Cup.”

Nazmul hinted veteran spearhead Mashrafe bin Mortaza, captain of Bangladesh in the 17th Asian Games, was their initial choice for the limited over games, but his injury prone nature left the board confused.

“We’ve no special choice over any special player for taking the role of captaincy in different formats. There is Mashrafe, Tamim [Iqbal], Shakib [al Hasan] and others. Mashrafe is our favourite player but you know he has been injury prone.

So it’s tough to take a long term decision regarding him. He is leading the team in Asian Games and hopefully will be captain in the Zimbabwe series also. Let’s see what happens,” the board president added.

“Shakib will take the field after a long period and his performance will be under scrutiny. Till now I am satisfied the way he is behaving but he needs to be in cricket at the moment.”

Nazmul also urged Shakib to try his best in the Asiad and change the story of the Bangladesh team.

“I sat with the players and I also sent Shakib a message to play good cricket in Asian Games because we’ve been going through a bad time. Shakib needs to lift his game for the sake of the country,” Nazmul informed.
