Ashraful appeals against BPL Tribunal’s sanction

Update : 21 Jul 2014, 06:36 PM

Banned national cricketer Mohammad Ashraful has appealed against the sanction of the Bangladesh Premier League Tribunal yesterday.

The former Bangladesh captain was banned for eight years (three years suspended) by the BPL anti-corruption tribunal for his involvement in match and spot-fixing in the 2013 edition of Bangladesh Premier League.

Ashraful, while talking to Dhaka Tribune yesterday, informed that his lawyers have prepared the draft of the appeal addressed to the chairman of the Bangladesh Cricket Board disciplinary committee.

“I talked to my lawyer and he has informed me that papers for the appeal are ready and that it has been delivered to the BCB disciplinary committee,” said Ashraful yesterday.

On the other hand, Shihab Chowdhury, managing director of BPL franchise Dhaka Gladiators, has also appealed to the sanctions made against him by the BPL anti-graft tribunal. The Dhaka Gladiators owner was found guilty of “being a party who tried to fix” a match in the second edition of the BPL.

Shihab’s lawyer barrister Nawraz MR Chowdhury informed that a soft copy of the appeal has already been emailed and that a hard copy of the appeal will be delivered to the BCB disciplinary committee today.

“Tomorrow (today) is the last day to make the appeal. We have the papers ready to be delivered,” said Nazraz.

Meanwhile, it has been learned that Sri Lanka cricketer Kaushal Lokuarachchi, who was charged for corruption by the ICC and BCB, and later confessed to wrongdoing to the tribunal, has also appealed. Kaushal was slapped with an 18-month ban for failing to report an approach.

With appeals being made by those who were found guilty along with both the ICC and the BCB, the BCB disciplinary will now arrange fresh hearings.

Considering all the necessary procedures, a move on the issues is likely to take place in September this year.
