Wijetunge, Campbell offered new Tigers roles

Update : 12 Jul 2014, 10:13 PM

Former Sri Lanka cricketer Piyal Wijetunge is all set to take up the role of the spin bowling coach of the Bangladesh team. According to sources within the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), the 42-year old will reach Dhaka tomorrow and join the ongoing national camp a day later.

Wijetunge comes in as the successor of former Pakistan spinner Saqlain Mushtaq who previously worked as the Bangladesh spin consultant on a 100-day contract.

A left-arm orthodox slow bowler in his playing days, Wijetunge had formed a lethal partnership with Muttiah Muralidaran, frightening the batsmen in the school leagues of Sri Lanka. However, unlike his fellow teammates, Wijetunge did not go on to have a distinguished international career, having played in only one Test, against South Africa in 1993. On his Test debut, Wijetunge bowled tidily picking up two wickets.

Meanwhile, the BCB is also in talks with former Australian cricketer Alan Campbell. BCB development committee chairman Khaled Mahmud told Dhaka Tribune yesterday that the board is in discussions with the Australian for the job as the high performance coach of the BCB Academy.
