Security drill turns Ctg stadium into war zone

The international cricket stadium on Chittagong city's Sagorika Road turned into a war zone as as different special security units of Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP) carried out a security drill ahead of the England-Bangladesh cricket match there. On Sunday morning, security drills took place from Hotel Radisson Blue to Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium, the entire route through which the England team will travel. CMP carried out drills in city’s Lalkhan Bazar area and the venue. Police officials additional measures will be inserted into the security plan where gaps were found. Six-tiers of security measures have been arranged for the match to ensure security for players and avert any kind of untoward situation, said CMP officials. The security drill started from 8:30am when the bus carrying dummy players faced a barrier in city’s Lalkhan Bazar area on its way to the stadium from Hotel Radisson Blue. At the drill, police personnel performed a rescue operation and salvaged the hostages by removing the barriers. Later the core part was performed at Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury stadium around 9:45am. Two sound grenades went off at the southern part of the stadium during a symbolic match and the players gathered in the middle of field putting their heads down.Ctg Stadium security england 2In the meantime, 45 members of the armed protection team moved into the ground and cordoned off the players while a few seconds later the members of Quick Response Team entered and took the players from the dressing room and moved them to a safe place. All drills took place under the supervision of CMP Commissioner Iqbal Bahar while senior police officials were also present at the spot. However, the Army's Para Commando force, flown in from Sylhet, was not seen taking part in the rehearsal. At the media briefing, CMP chief Iqbal Bahar said a total of 1,800 police personnel will be deployed inside and outside the stadium during the game.” “SWAT, Bomb Disposal Team, Quick Response Team, Striking Reserve Force are kept in the sixth stage of the plan while DB, plainclothes police, Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) and Fire Service personnel will be kept on high alert during the match,” added the CMP commissioner. “The Para Commando Force did not take part at the rehearsal but observed the whole drill. The force will be kept as a stand by force during the game,” Iqbal said. The commissioner told the reporters that bringing bags, backpacks, bottles, cans, soft drinks, food, camera and electronic devices will be strictly prohibited at the match. Spectators will be allowed to get in through eight out of 16 the entry points. The third ODI will be held on October 13 while a test match will also be held on October 20 as per as schedule. After the militant attack at the upscale restaurant Holy Artisan Bakery in Dhaka’s Gulshan on July 1, the English Cricket Board had raised concerns about the security of their players. Earlier three officials of England Cricket Board visited the Zahur Ahmed international cricket ground on August 19 to inspect security measures.
