Update : 26 Jun 2014, 08:56 PM

Former Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) president AHM Mostafa Kamal officially took charge as the president of the International Cricket Council (ICC). The declaration came at the ICC’s Memorandum and Articles of Association in the ongoing ICC Annual Conference in Melbourne yesterday.

Kamal is the first Bangladeshi to be chosen for the post and 11th person overall to take up this prestigious position.

“This is a memorable and historic day for Bangladesh cricket,” said Kamal in a statement released in the ICC website yesterday.

“On this day 14 years ago, Bangladesh became the 10th Test playing country. Today, a Bangladeshi becomes the 11th President of the International Cricket Council. Thank you for bestowing this honour on Bangladesh and me.

Kamal was the vice-president of the ICC from 2012 to 2014.

Meanwhile, the BCB has congratulated Kamal on becoming the new president of world cricket’s governing body.

BCB president Nazmul Hasan through a media release yesterday said it was a proud moment for everyone associated with Bangladesh cricket.

“Today (yesterday) is a momentous occasion because for the first time we have a Bangladeshi as ICC President. This is an honour for the nation. On behalf of the BCB I extend our very best wishes to Kamal,” said Nazmul in the BCB press release.

“He is a man of cricket and his affection for the game is undying. I am sure the ICC, Bangladesh and the global cricket fraternity would benefit from Mr Kamal’s enterprise and dedication,” he added.

The BCB also congratulated N Srinivasan from India after he was confirmed as the first chairman of the ICC.

In a congratulatory message BCB supremo Nazmul said Srinivasan’s dynamism and vision will significantly contribute to the betterment of international cricket.
