A special tribunal has imposed an 8-year ban on cricketer Mohammad Ashraful for his involvement in Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) match fixing.
The tribunal also fined him with Tk10 lakh. The ban will be effective in all forms of cricket.
Dhaka Gladiators owner Shihab Chowdhury has also been banned for ten years and fined with Tk20 lakh. Ashraful played for the Gladiators in the BPL-2 in February 2013.
Former New Zealand cricketer Lou Vincent has alos been banned for three years while Sri Lankan cricketer Kaushal Lokuarachchi for 18 months. Both the players were found guilty of fixing in BPL tournament.
The accused will get the opportunity to file appeal against the tribunal’s decision within 21 days.
A three-member special tribunal, formed by the Bangladesh Cricket Board to probe BPL match fixing, announced the verdict at a press briefing in the capital’s Gulshan Wednesday afternoon.
The tribunal was formed to conduct the hearing of the fixing allegations brought by the ICC (International Cricket Council) from the second edition of Bangladesh Premier League.
In May 2013, ICC Anti-Corruption Security Unit (Acsu) visited Dhaka to investigate dubious on-field incidents from a couple of games in the BPL-2 in February 2013. At that time, Mohammad Ashraful confessed to wrong doing and named several others who he claimed were involved in fixing, both in the BPL and in the international arena.
On August 14, 2013 the ICC charged nine individuals with fixing activities and related offences. The charges were related to spot and match fixing by players and officials of two time BPL champions, Dhaka Gladiators and the failure in reporting the corrupt approaching.
Three months later, the BCB formed a three-member tribunal heads by Justice Khademul Islam Chowdhury, a former judge of the Supreme Court, to look through all the objections, allegations and applications made by Acsu and the accused.
