Experience propels Aussies: Lanning

Experience of the players in tough situations and the confidence were the key behind Australia women’s triumph in lifting their hat-trick ICC World Twenty20 trophy, felt their captain Meg Lanning.

The Australians started the 15-day long tournament on a bitter note by losing their opening game to New Zealand by seven runs, but left with the sweetness of outplaying England for the second consecutive time in the world event’s finale.

“It was great to come out here and play a pretty perfect game. We built around the tournament pretty well (since the defeat against New Zealand). We gained momentum, we gained confidence. When we came into the final, we had a lot of players in good form,” said Meg at the post match conference at Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium yesterday.

“We have got quite a young side, but we have got experience in tough situations. We played really good cricket throughout the tournament and today our bowlers set it up for us,” the 25-year-old added.

The newly built Sylhet Stadium hosted the whole of the women’s tournament except for the two semis and the final game. Lanning informed that her side enjoyed the change of venues for the final stage of the competition and that it was not much trouble for them to cope with the conditions.

“We’ve enjoyed ourselves here. It’s been something very different and something we have adjusted to. Sylhet was great, but to be able to get back and winning in Dhaka was pretty special,” said Lanning.

Player of the final Sarah Coyte credited her experience gained playing with her twin brothers, Adam and Scott Coyte. Both Adam and Scott are professional cricketers in Australian domestic circuit.

“I played a lot with my brothers and which actually helps. This is nice to be able to execute today (yesterday). I’ve always bowled at the death and it’s something I’m really proud of,” said Sarah.
