The International Cricket Council (ICC) has reportedly issued a stern warning to the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), cautioning that Pakistan could face complete cricketing isolation if it withdraws from the 2026 T20 World Cup in solidarity with Bangladesh.
The standoff comes amid rising tensions between the ICC and PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi, whose recent remarks accusing the global body of “double standards” have drawn sharp disapproval. Naqvi’s comments were triggered by the ICC’s refusal to move Bangladesh’s World Cup matches out of India, despite previously approving a hybrid hosting model for Pakistan fixtures.
According to NDTV sources, the ICC is particularly unhappy with Naqvi’s confrontational stance and an alleged solidarity pact with the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB). By publicly questioning the ICC’s authority and hinting at a possible boycott of the T20 World Cup, Pakistan has escalated the dispute to what officials describe as a “breaking point.”
If Pakistan follows through on its threat to withdraw, the ICC is said to be prepared with unprecedented sanctions. These could include suspension of all bilateral series involving Pakistan, exclusion from the Asia Cup, and a coordinated refusal by member boards to grant No Objection Certificates (NOCs) to overseas players for participation in the Pakistan Super League (PSL).
Such measures would have severe financial implications for the PCB, potentially cutting off major revenue streams and sharply reducing the commercial value of domestic tournaments. The national team could also be left without regular international fixtures, apart from ICC events.
While Pakistan has not yet formally withdrawn from the T20 World Cup, Naqvi has stated that the final decision rests with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. He has also urged other cricket boards to support Bangladesh’s position.
With the World Cup deadline approaching, the ICC and PCB now face a critical period that could significantly reshape Pakistan’s role in international cricket.
