At the end of June this year, the amount of non-performing loans (NPLs) in the country's banking sector reached Tk606,555 crore, which accounts for 32.78% of total disbursed loans.
Arief Hossain Khan, spokesperson and executive director of Bangladesh Bank, shared this information Wednesday.
According to Bangladesh Bank data, defaulted loans stood at Tk588,704 crore at the end of March 2026, which was 32.26% of the loans disbursed at that time.
By the end of June, this figure rose to Tk606,555 crore.
Consequently, defaulted loans increased by Tk17,851 crore within three months, with the classified loan rate rising by 0.52%.
An analysis of the report shows that classified loans reached nearly one-third of the total banking sector loans by the end of June.
This has sparked renewed concerns regarding the asset quality and financial stability of the banking sector.
Meanwhile, defaulted loans stood at Tk557,217 crore at the end of December 2025.
This indicates an increase of Tk49,338 crore in NPLs during the first six months of the current year.
At the end of June 2025, NPLs amounted to Tk530,428 crore, reflecting an annual increase of Tk76,127 crore.
