Objections to BCB election under microscope

Update : 29 Sep 2013, 04:55 PM

The election commission of Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) discussed objections over 16 voters till late night yesterday and will come out with the final voters list today.

There were objections about the councillorship of Naimur Rahman Durjoy of Manikganj, Monjur Kader of Munshiganj, Akram Khan of Chittagong Division, Imtiaz Ahmed Shamsul Huda Kislu of Rajshahi Division, Sheikh Sohel of Khulna Division, Nuruddin Nayon of Laxmipur, Saiful Islam of Khulna, Ashrafuzzaman Pintu of Narail, Ahmed Sajjadul Alam Bobby of Sheikh Russell and Jalal Yunus of Rayer Bazar Athletic Club. Moreover Mirpur Boys, Sonar Bangla, Hillol Juba Sangha and North Bengal Cricket Academy lodged complaints about not maintaining the third division cricket league tables properly.

Former president of Bangladesh Cricket Board and the councilor of Baridhara Dazzlers Saber Hossain Chowdhury though did not lodge any complaints over the councillorships, but submitted a letter about the anomalies of the election procedure.

Saber said he has tried to focus upon some basic points. “I have mentioned a number of basic issues to consider. The upcoming election of the Bangladesh Cricket Board is going to take place under the light of a verdict of the Appellate Division. I have asked the members of the election commission whether they have any copy of the verdict with them. When a verdict of the High Court is disbursed, you can’t take further steps without a certified copy of the verdict,” he claimed.

Saber said the publication of the voters list should be postponed. “It was framed by the cricket board and that is not the constitutional way, BCB is prohibited from performing any election activities, the election commission should cover all the procedures. This voters list doesn’t have any legal authenticity, it should be called off,” said Saber.

Saber also said the time frame of 13 days for the BCB election was insufficient.

Barrister Sarwar Hossain Payel represented the plaintiffs in the election commission. “We have focused upon many anomalies in the election process. The EC did not possess a certified verdict of the Appellate Division. We want a transparent and democratic environment in the BCB election process,” said the lawyer.
