Former Bangladesh captain Tamim Iqbal is considering taking his first step towards his ambition of coming into the Bangladesh Cricket Board as a policy maker by investing in Dhaka Premier Division Cricket League side Gulshan Cricket Club.
Tamim, who officially called off his international career following the final of the Bangladesh Premier League Twenty20 earlier this month, has jointly invested in Gulshan CC, which was previously run by Beximco Sports.
Beximco Sports has been in a financial crisis since the fall of the Awami League government in August last year.
Tamim has partnered with BPL T20 franchise Fortune Barishal owner Mizanur Rahman to finance Gulshan CC, which was promoted to the Premier Division from the First Division league last season.
Tamim however, has not taken the councillorship of the club as the left-handed batter is still to play another couple of seasons of domestic cricket.
It is understood that Fortune Barishal owner Mizan is set to be named the club's chairman of the cricket committee, and also the councilor.
Tamim is unlikely to take the chair to "avoid conflict of interest", given that the southpaw will feature as captain of another Premier League side, Mohammedan Sporting Club, this season.
“We haven’t thought or discussed who is going to be the councilor. So far, it is just that Mizan bhai and I have agreed to finance Gulshan Cricket Club,” said Tamim to the media Sunday.
“We haven’t decided who is going to the be the councilor and, to be honest are not even thinking about it at the moment. At the moment we have just recently agreed to join the club and support the team financially,” Tamim added.
Earlier, prominent coach Khaled Mahmud Sujon joined Gulshan CC as the head coach following his 12-year-long stint with Abahani Limited.
Speaking to the media, former Bangladesh captain Sujon said the club were looking for financer and that there could not possibly be a better option than Tamim.
“I know Tamim Iqbal is a man of word. I was looking for a genuine investor and thus got in contact with Tamim and he agreed to it and brought Mizan bhai as the partner. So both Tamim and Mizan bhai are investors in the club,” said Sujon.
The 2024-25 season of the Dhaka League is likely to start early next month.
