Bangladesh erased the deficit and took an 81-run lead against South Africa before rain and bad light ended play on day three of the first Test in Mirpur Wednesday.

The Tigers posted 283 for the loss of seven wickets with Mehedi Hasan Miraz going strong on 87 alongside the unbeaten Nayeem Hasan (16).

Having struck his ninth Test fifty, all-rounder Miraz went on to face 171 deliveries in his undefeated knock, hitting nine fours and a six to keep the Proteas at bay.

The right-hander shared a valuable 138-run stand for the seventh wicket with debutant Jaker Ali Anik.

Jaker played out 111 balls for his 58, featuring seven boundaries, before being trapped in front by Keshav Maharaj soon after his maiden Test half-century.

Earlier, the hosts lost three quick wickets in the morning session before Miraz and Jaker rescued their side and halted the slide.

Kagiso Rabada initiated the first breakthrough early on day three as Mahmudul Hasan Joy (40) chased a wide delivery outside off and David Bedingham took a regulation catch at slip cordon.

Just two balls later in the 32nd over of the innings, Mushfiqur Rahim’s (33) defense was breached by Rabada, just like his dismissal in the first innings, as the experienced batter missed an incoming delivery and stumps went flying.

Maharaj then removed Liton Das (seven) three overs later as TV replay showed a thin edge en route to the wicket-keeper when the Proteas took the review.

Miraz and Jaker then batted sensibly and formed a good partnership that helped Bangladesh avoid the risk of innings defeat.

Earlier, South Africa posted 308 in reply to Bangladesh’s 106.

1ST TEST, DAY 3

Bangladesh 106 & 283/7 in 85 overs (Miraz 87*, Rabada 4/35) lead South Africa 308 by 81 runs
