Bangladesh Cricket Board president Faruk Ahmed following Thursday's meeting said the board cannot guarantee a safe passage for Shakib al Hasan and that it all depends on the government.

All-rounder Shakib on the same day announced his plan to retire from Test and Twenty20 International cricket.

Shakib in the press conference ahead of the second and final Test against India in Kanpur declared that he has already played his last T20I, which was in the T20 World Cup 2024, and wished to finish his Test career playing the Test series against South Africa at home in October.

Since the fall of the Awami League government in August this year, Shakib has not returned to Bangladesh.

After that he was named in a murder case following a garment worker's death.

He has recently been fined Tk50 lakhs for stock market manipulation.

Additionally, some of his fans were angered over his silence during the recent student protests.

It is understood that under the circumstances, Shakib is avoiding traveling to the country.

Speaking to the media, Shakib said he will play the South Africa series if he can come to the country and leave on his own terms, which he said will be his last Test series.

Without the assurance, the Kanpur Test set to begin Friday might be his last.

"We have spoken to Shakib twice [on the matter]. I am not part of law enforcement, so I cannot provide personal security. That responsibility lies with the authorities. The BCB does not have the capacity to issue any kind of clearance. Security must come from the government. The BCB is not an agency, police force, or RAB. Security measures must come from the government,” said BCB chief Faruk to the media at Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium.

The BCB president also expressed desire to see Shakib play his final Test on home soil, saying: "If Shakib can play his last Test here, I believe, like him, that nothing could be better than that."

Faruk did not ask Shakib to reconsider his decision to retire.

“Shakib is going through a tough time. I did not try to persuade him otherwise. He feels it's the right time for someone new to take his place in the shorter format, and he wanted to retire from Test cricket in Dhaka. I respect that,” former Bangladesh captain Faruk explained.
