Pacer Abu Haider Rony made an instant impact with a five-wicket haul in his second match in this Bangladesh Premier League as Rangpur Riders edged past Fortune Barishal by one wicket in Monday’s thrilling contest at Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chittagong.
Rangpur bolstered top spot with 18 points from 11 matches and also made sure they would finish the group phase among the top two.
By virtue of this victory, the Riders also avenged their five-wicket defeat to Barishal in their first match.
Barishal are still third with 12 points from 11 games.
Despite a fluent start after batting first, which raised the prospect of a total closer to 200, Barishal were eventually restricted to 151/9, largely due to Rony who registered career-best 5/12.
Rangpur were cruising towards victory before suffering a collapse which raised Barishal's hopes but the Riders’ lower order held their nerve to confirm the win with three balls to spare as they put up 155/9 with Hasan Mahmud hitting the winning boundary.
