Shakib al Hasan was booed when he got out and made his way to the dressing room during the humiliating loss to the Netherlands and the Bangladesh captain later admitted that the fans have all the right to show their disappointment.
“Disappointing. But naturally, they (fans) expect us to perform well. If we don’t perform well, they have the right to criticize us. I have no complaints against them. I think the way we have played and performed, we deserve these (being booed),” Shakib said at the post-match press conference at Eden Gardens Saturday.
Shakib is struggling with the bat in this World Cup as he scored five, one, 40, one and 14 and even returned to Dhaka for personal training session with his mentor Nazmul Abedeen Fahim which created much discussions and controversy.
The Tigers skipper was even booed by local fans in Mirpur which was probably the first time in his career.
Having now been the subject of discontent at Eden Gardens by Bangladesh fans showed just how much pressure he is under as an underperforming player and captain.
Bangladesh failed to chase down only 230 runs against the Netherlands on the relatively good batting wicket at Eden Gardens and were bundled out for just 142 in 42.2 overs following heavy defeats in their last four games.
The men in red and green only won against Afghanistan in the first match and suffered five defeats in a row.
Their next three opponents are Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Australia.
