Bangladesh showed promising signs at the beginning but faded away later on as they posted 256 runs losing eight wickets in their 50 overs against India in Thursday’s World Cup clash in Pune.
Batting first, the Tigers got off to a terrific start through the openers Tanzid Hasan and Liton Das who put on a record 93-run partnership – Bangladesh’s best ever opening stand in the World Cup.
Tanzid registered his maiden fifty in One Day Internationals while Liton recorded his 12th to set a great platform for the men in red and green.
Tanzid made 51 off 43, featuring five fours and three sixes, before being trapped in front by left-arm wrist spinner Kuldeep Yadav.
Liton struck 66 off 82, studded with seven fours, but departed after playing one shot too many, giving a catch to Shubman Gill at long off off the bowling of left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja.
A middle-order wobble however, saw the visitors lose their momentum as makeshift captain Nazmul Hossain Shanto (eight), Mehedi Hasan Miraz (three) and Towhid Hridoy (16) were unable to continue the good work.
Fighting knocks from wicketkeeper-batter Mushfiqur Rahim (38 off 46) and No 7 Mahmudullah (46 off 36) helped guide the tourists past the 250-mark whereas at one stage, they were on course for 300.
Jasprit Bumrah, Jadeja and Mohammed Siraj bagged two wickets each.
