BCB to award Tk35 lakhs bonus to national women's cricket team

The Bangladesh Cricket Board has announced a financial bonus of Tk35 lakhs for the national women's cricket team in recognition of their success in the recently concluded One Day International series against India.

BCB president Nazmul Hasan met the team for lunch Sunday afternoon and made the announcement while speaking to the media.

The Tigresses achieved their maiden win against India in ODIs and then managed to draw the series 1-1.

Bangladesh had also won a Twenty20 International in the three-match series where they eventually lost 2-1.

The ODI series concluded with a nail-biting tie between the two sides in the third and final game at Mirpur Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium Saturday.

Bangladesh started the series with a historic 40-run [Duckworth-Lewis-Stern] victory, while India bounced back with a 108-run win in the second game.

“Normally, we give bonuses when we win a series, but since we won our first ODI against India and there were a few individual performances like Fargana Hoque, who scored a century, we decided to give Tk 25 lakhs to the players,” Nazmul informed the media.

“We will also give Tk2 lakhs bonus to the player who scored a hundred, and other cricketers individually. I think the total amount of bonus will be around Tk35 lakhs, including the bonus for the coaching staff," he added.

Hosts Bangladesh's celebration of the event, however, was marred by outbursts and unsporting behavior from India team captain Harmanpreet Kaur.

During the game, Harmanpreet was seen losing her cool as she smashed the stumps after being given out, and later, during the prize-giving ceremony, she called the umpiring "pathetic."

The Indian captain worsened the situation during the end-of-series photo session with players from both teams when she shouted, "bring the umpires too," suggesting they were a part of the Bangladesh team.

Disappointed Bangladesh captain Nigar Sultana, it is understood, spoke about it to BCB officials and took her players back to the dressing room soon after.

However, BCB president Nazmul refrained from making any comment and left the incident for the regulatory bodies to handle.

“Cricket is such a game where everyone knows its rules and regulations, and the entire world has witnessed what happened. So, we have nothing to say as there are rules and regulations, and those will be applied accordingly. We have nothing to say since there is a match referee and umpires, and the International Cricket Council will take necessary steps. But I am happy to see that our girls didn't do anything like that,” said the BCB chief.
