Last year the tournament was played in Twenty20 format but the 2023 edition will be held in 50-over format as the teams prepare themselves for the upcoming One Day International World Cup, set to be held in India in October-November.

The tournament will be played based on a hybrid model, with Pakistan hosting four matches in two venues (Multan and Lahore) and Sri Lanka hosting the remaining games.
The top four teams of the two groups will play each other in the super four stage.
The final will be played on September 17 in Colombo.
The Lankans are the defending champions, having beaten Pakistan in the final last year in the United Arab Emirates.
The last 50-over Asia Cup was held in 2018, also in the UAE, where India emerged victorious after defeating Bangladesh in an exciting final.
Out of the 15 editions, two have been played in T20 format, the other occasion being 2016.
