BCB aims to start work immediately on Sheikh Hasina Stadium

Update : 30 Dec 2021, 08:54 PM

Bangladesh Cricket Board has appointed consultants to shortlist possible construction firms for the Sheikh Hasina International Cricket Stadium in Dhaka’s Purbachal Residential Model Town.

BCB president Nazmul Hasan while speaking to the media following the newly formed board’s second meeting Friday informed that the board aims to start the process immediately for the construction work of the venue that will be called the Home of Cricket of Bangladesh.

“The consultancy firm will be responsible for shortlisting five best construction firms. We have received a total of 26 EoIs [Expression of Interest] from the leading firms from around the world. We discussed what we are looking at with them [the consultancy firm]. We want to start the work immediately but it is a lengthy process, given that we also need to keep with the government compliance. The government will eventually select the firm to construct the stadium,” said Nazmul.

The board has decided to renovate the existing stadiums, despite the responsibility lying with the National Sports Council.

“The renovation work of the seats, lights and the giant screen doesn’t fall under BCB’s responsibility. We have been asking them [NSC] to replace the broken chairs in Dhaka, Chittagong and Sylhet for a long time now,” Nazmul informed.

“Seeing no other option, the board spoke to NSC and has now taken the responsibility of replacing the chairs at the different venues. As a part of a trial, we placed some locally sourced chairs at Mirpur Stadium and the quality being satisfactory we will now place them in Chittagong and Sylhet too. The best part of this is the cost is very less compared to if sourced from international market and then the company is providing two years free replacement guarantee,” the BCB chief added.

The board in the meeting also decided to develop facilities of 20 different grounds around the country and also immediately purchase grounds in or around Dhaka to cut off load from Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium.

“You see all our matches in Dhaka are played in Mirpur, let it be of the national team, domestic cricket, even age group. This cannot be the way. We immediately need to find grounds in and around Dhaka which will be used for domestic tournaments. We have already formed the committee for this and they will immediately start working on it,” said Nazmul.
