BCB forms committee to review Tigers’ T20 WC performance

Update : 23 Dec 2021, 09:40 PM

The Bangladesh Cricket Board has formed a committee to review the national cricket team’s disastrous performance in the T20 World Cup 2021 held in Oman and the UAE.

The members of the committee are BCB directors Enayet Husain Siraj and Mohammed Jalal Younus.

The committee has been entrusted with taking the views of Bangladesh squad members (players and team management) and relevant stakeholders to assess why the team could not deliver the expected performance in the event and share its findings with the board.

Bangladesh lost two warm-up games, against Sri Lanka and Ireland, prior to the qualifiers.

They then lost their first match of the qualifiers against Scotland and later won against Oman and Papua New Guinea to qualify for the Super 12 stage.

The Tigers lost all five of their Super 12 games against Sri Lanka, England, the West Indies, South Africa and Australia.

In the last two matches they folded for just 84 and 73 against the Proteas and Aussies respectively, ending their T20 World Cup campaign with below-par performances.

Bangladesh’s poor show in the last two games drew criticisms among cricket pundits around the world as the Tigers were playing the T20 World Cup just after winning back to back home T20I series against Australia and New Zealand.

Commentator and retired Australian batting great Mark Waugh called Bangladesh "embarrassing" after they were bowled out for only 73 against Australia in their final match, before the Aussies raced to their target in just 38 balls.

"Bangladesh offered nothing with the bat. That is an embarrassing display," the Australian said on Fox Television.

"It's supposed to be the T20 World Cup and you wouldn't find that in third grade in the park."

Bangladesh will play three T20Is against Pakistan at home with the first match taking place on November 19.

Bangladesh are assured of a place in the Super 12 phase of the next T20 World Cup in Australia in 2022 after being confirmed as one of the top eight teams in the ICC ranking.
