Bangladesh’s awful campaign ends with shambolic defeat

Update : 23 Dec 2021, 12:28 PM

Bangladesh’s T20 World Cup 2021 campaign is finally over.

The team that had hoped to showcase their improvement in the shortest format and aimed to play the semi-finals are now set to return home without a win in the main event.

Bangladesh have conceded defeat in all five games of the Super 12 stage.

Bangladesh team are scheduled to travel to Dhaka Friday evening with an unchanged track record in the T20 World Cup – of having failed to win a game in Super 12 history.

The defeat also ruled Bangladesh out from the race of direct qualification to the Super 12 round of the T20 World Cup 2022.

Bangladesh played their last game of the Super 12s Thursday, against Australia and conceded a defeat by eight wickets and with 82 balls to spare at Dubai International Cricket Stadium.

This had come after the team had hit another low with the bat – scoring just 73 runs before getting all out in 15 overs after being sent to bat first.

The total is Bangladesh’s second lowest in the format, and the second score under 100 in a span of three days.

In the previous game, against South Africa Tuesday at Abu Dhabi, Bangladesh were all out for just 84 runs – which is now their third lowest total in T20Is.

Bangladesh met Australia for the first time since their 4-1 series win in Dhaka in August.

Bangladesh had literally ruled the opponents in those encounters but in Dubai the conditions were contrasting as well as the final outcome.

Bangladesh simply didn’t have the advantage of conditions and wicket, which in Mirpur plays as their 12th man.

Bangladesh were once again put to a test on a sporting wicket and exposed to quality bowling attack.

The surface in Dubai offered bounce to the seamers but ball was coming to the bat nicely on the flat surface that allowed batsmen to play their shots.

Already at their lowest ebb, Bangladesh nosedived deep into trouble early in the game, yet again courtesy of opener Liton Das.

The right-handed batsman perished for a golden duck in the third ball of the innings to start the debacle, which saw Bangladesh down by five wickets inside seven overs with just 33 runs on the board.

The Australia bowlers ran havoc as Soumya Sarkar and Mushfiqur Rahim fell scoring just five and one respectively.

Left-handed opener Mohammad Naim along with captain Mahmudullah tried to recover the damage with their fourth wicket stand but could add only 22 before pacer Josh Hazlewood removed Naim on 17 off 16 balls.

There balls later, Bangladesh lost Afif Hossain - for a second consecutive duck - to get young Shamim Hossain in the middle with Mahmudullah.

The mix of experience and youth in Mahmudullah and Shamim respectively worked on a small recovery and got Bangladesh up to 62 for six from 33 for five.

Shamim was caught behind off Adam Zampa on 18-ball 19, the highest score in the innings, to break the stand on 29.

This was perhaps the final blow on Bangladesh as the innings could survive only 31 more balls.

Mahedi Hasan was sent back to the dressing room for a duck in the next ball and eight balls later Mahmudullah walked off the field as the last establish batsman scoring 16.

Having restricted Bangladesh for a meager total, Australia targeted improving their run rate in the points table.

Both Australia and South Africa have secured equal points in four games but the Aussies are now at number two in the table courtesy of a better run rate than the Proteas.

The intent to go after every ball and every bowler saw the opening stand put 58 runs in five overs.

Bangladesh pacer Taskin Ahmed dismantled the wickets to remove Aaron Finch on a 20-ball 40 involving two boundaries and four over boundaries.

Six balls later, Australia lost their second wicket, David Warne on 18 off 14, to young left-arm pacer Shariful Islam.

Australia at this point needed seven more runs for the win and it came in three deliveries off Taskin.

With Mitchell Marsh on strike, the first ball went for a boundary and the second for a wide.

In the third, right-handed batter Marsh slammed the ball over the ropes to register a dominating win.
