Bangladesh national cricket team are set to begin their preparation for the upcoming Asia Cup and 50-over World Cup when they take on visitors Afghanistan in the three-match One Day International series beginning in Chittagong later this week.
The Bangladesh ODI squad along with the team management travelled to the port city Saturday following the Eid-ul-Azha break and is set to attend their first training session at Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium Sunday.
Bangladesh ODI captain Tamim Iqbal was already present in the host city having spent the Eid holidays with the family in his home town.
There are concerns with the left-handed batter's back injury and it is understood that a thorough assessment by the medical team will decide the cricketer's viability for the series, scheduled to get underway Wednesday at ZACS.
ZACS will also host the second and third ODI on July 8 and 11 respectively.
In the first phase of the series, Tamim missed the one-off Test match against Afghanistan due to the injury.
Eyes will be on star cricketer Shakib al Hasan too as he awaits a return to the national fold.
The left-arm all-rounder was also unavailable in the lone Test due to the injured tip of his right index finger sustained during the second ODI in the away tour against Ireland in England in May.
Shakib was immediately ruled out from competitive action for six weeks.
Meanwhile, Afghanistan are scheduled to reach Dhaka Saturday night and travel to Chittagong for the ODI series.
Both Bangladesh and Afghanistan will then travel to Sylhet to fight it out in the two Twenty20 internationals on July 14 and 16 respectively.
