Bangladesh batting coach Jamie Siddons applauded Mushfiqur Rahim for showing character once again and pulling the home side out of trouble against Ireland in the ongoing one-off Test match at Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium.
Hosts Bangladesh on day two scored 369 having started the day on the backfoot on 40 for three.
Mushfiq held the ground and came up with an innings saving knock as the other batters in the line-up played around him.
The right-hander reached his 10th Test ton in 135 deliveries and posted 126 before being sent back to the dressing room by Andy McBrine.
Mushfiq's 166-ball innings was laced with 15 boundaries and a maximum.
Playing his 85th Test, Mushfiq is now joint-second along with Tamim Iqbal for the most centuries by a Bangladeshi in the longest format of the game.
Mominul Haque, with 11 Test hundreds in 56 matches, is on top of the table.
“He [Mushfiq] was amazing. We were in a little bit of a trouble with him at the other end. Mushy generally comes good when the chips are down. He sticks in there and makes sure to get the score for us. He got the score going nicely. Again, he was aggressive when it was required. When the ball was there, he put it away. He was very disciplined around his defense and his leaving game. We need to have that in Test cricket," said Siddons to the media following day two's play in Mirpur Wednesday.
Though Mushfiq walked out with glory, Bangladesh missed out on a second possible century – by captain Shakib al Hasan.
Shakib played a vital role in the innings recovery as well but failed to reach the milestone, falling short by 13 runs.
Left-handed batter Shakib played a fiery 94-ball 87 composed with 14 fours before falling to a soft dismissal to off-spinner McBrine, who finished with six wickets in the innings – his first fifer in the format.
Bangladesh finished day two on the driving seat having removed four wickets as Ireland trailed by 128 runs.
