Tigers clinch historic T20 series against world champions England

Taskin finished the match in style by smashing two boundaries off the fourth and fifth balls over deep extra cover

Bangladesh held their nerve and defeated world champions England by four wickets to clinch the three-match Twenty20 series 2-0.

Chasing 118 for victory, the Tigers reached their target with seven deliveries to spare in Mirpur's Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium Sunday.

A target of 118 from 20 overs looked tricky and both openers Liton Das and Rony Talukdar departed for nine within the powerplay.

But in-form Nazmul Hossain Shanto anchored the innings with a solid unbeaten knock, scoring 46 to help clinch the series for the Tigers.

Towhid Hridoy played a handy innings of 17 while all-rounder Mehedi Hasan Miraz scored a vital 20 off 16 balls in a crucial moment of the chase, belting two sixes.

Losing skipper Shakib al Hasan (nought) and Afif Hossain (two) in the closing stages of the chase gave slight tension to the Tigers camp as at one stage, 13 runs were needed from two overs with Shanto at the crease as the only specialist batsman.

But Shanto scored seven runs from the first three deliveries of the 19th over, including a brilliant boundary over deep square leg region, and later Taskin Ahmed finished the match in style by smashing consecutive fours off the fourth and fifth balls over deep extra cover.

Earlier, Bangladesh captain Shakib won the toss and elected to field.

Interestingly England lost the toss nine times in a row in all formats in the year 2023 and English skipper Jos Buttler's luck did not shine on the 10th occasion either.

England opted for a different opening pair as Dawid Malan initiated the proceedings with Phil Salt instead of regular opener Buttler.

Malan's match-winning hundred in the first one-day international and experience in Mirpur pitch were the reasons behind this change.

Bangladesh picked one extra spinner in the playing XI as Miraz replaced Shamim Hossain.

But Shakib started the bowling attack with pacers from both ends, breaking the usual trend of starting with a spinner early in the innings in Mirpur.

Taskin made the breakthrough and Malan's move to open the innings did not work as the left-hander departed in the third over after scoring five.

Despite losing Malan early, England's top-order made a decent start as they scored 50 runs by the end of powerplay.

But Bangladesh bowlers bounced back after six overs and produced a mini collapse as Salt (25), Moeen Ali (15) and Buttler (four) got out in the next three overs.

From 50/1, England plunged to 57/4 after nine overs losing all their premier batsmen and were not able to lift themselves towards a big total from there.

Miraz was particularly sublime with the ball in the middle overs as he bagged four wickets leaking just 12 runs in his four overs, which is his career best bowling figure in T20Is.

In fact an all-round bowling effort from all the Bangladesh bowlers kept the pressure on England and the tourists eventually managed to score a subpar total of 117 runs, losing their last wicket in the final ball of the innings.

Miraz's all-round performance earned him a well-deserved player of the match award and Shanto was adjudged most valuable player for his valiant unbeaten knock that guided the Tigers home.
