Barishal join table-toppers Sylhet on 10 points, Khulna revive campaign

Barishal beat Dhaka by 13 runs, Khulna defeat Chattogram by 7 wickets

Update : 20 Jan 2023, 10:54 PM

Shakib al Hasan's Fortune Barishal joined table-toppers Sylhet Strikers on five victories after overcoming Dhaka Dominators by 13 runs in the last match of the Chittagong phase in the Bangladesh Premier League Twenty20 at Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium Friday.

Barishal and Sylhet have both played six matches each but the latter are ahead by virtue of net run rate, while Dhaka are languishing at the bottom with two points having played half their total number of games.

Chasing 174, the Dominators were restricted to 160/4 after a valiant 36-ball 54 from the unbeaten Nasir Hossain, who prior to Friday scored 66 not out, 39, 30, 44 and 36 not out in BPL 2023.

The tournament's second highest scorer with 269 runs, captain Nasir put on 89 for the fourth wicket alongside Mohammad Mithun (47) to lay the foundations for the chase, but Barishal bowlers held their nerve eventually.

Barishal earlier posted 173/5 after being asked to bat first, riding on the in-form Iftikhar Ahmed's undefeated 34-ball 56, while Mahmudullah was not out on 35 off 31.

Khulna bag second consecutive win

After losing three straight matches, Khulna Tigers finally appear to have found their form, as they cruised to a seven-wicket victory over Chattogram Challengers, reports BSS.

Mahmudul Hasan Joy and skipper Yasir Ali were instrumental in the facile victory which took the team in the top four for the first time this season.

Joy hammered a 44-ball 59 with five fours and one six to give the side a solid platform, which was utilized well by Yasir, who blasted an unbeaten 36 off 17 with two fours and four sixes to help overhaul Chattogram's 157/9 with 159/3.

Opener Munim Shahriar was out for a second-ball-duck to give Khulna a start to forget but they quickly recovered from the shaky spell, thanks to Tamim Iqbal and Joy.

The duo shared 104 runs for the second wicket stand to help Khulna reach a favorable position to win the game.

Tamim, who made a 47-ball 60 in the previous game, struck 44 off 37 with the help of four fours and one six.

But Nihaduzzaman dealt a double blow, claiming the wicket of Tamim and Joy in his consecutive two overs, which gave Chattogram a glimmer of hope to bounce back.

However, their hopes were shattered when Yasir dismantled the Chattogram bowling in an extraordinary attack.

He was ably supported by Azam Khan who was unbeaten on 15 as Khulna reached the target with four balls to spare.

Earlier, asked to bat first, Chattogram lost Max O'Dowd cheaply before Usman Khan and Afif Hossain brought the side back in contention with a 70-run partnership.

Amad Butt broke the partnership with the wicket of Usman, who top-scored with 31-ball 45, hitting seven fours and one six.

Wahab Riaz then got into the act with the wicket of Afif, who made 35.

Thereafter the fast bowler scythed down the middle order in a gem of pace bowling spell to finish with 4/36.

Failing to negotiate Wahab meant Chattogram fell short by at least 30 runs which they expected after the partnership of Usman and Afif.

Darwish Rasooli added 25 while Farhad Reza was undefeated on 21.

Saifuddin took 2/40 to complement Wahab's four-wicket haul.
