Left-arm spinner Taijul Islam and off spinner Mehedi Hasan Miraz shared five wickets as Bangladesh hit back nicely to leave day one of the first Test against India evenly poised at Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium Wednesday.
Taijul had figure of 3/84 while Miraz claimed 2/71, forcing India to end the opening day on 278/6.
Shreyas Iyer was batting on 82 at stumps, looking to give the visitors control of the game on day two.
He and Cheteshwar Pujara rescued India after a batting collapse in the morning session, but Bangladesh came back nicely with late strikes which saw them take out well-set Pujara for 90 and Axar Patel on 13 in the last delivery of the day.
Before being dismissed, Pujara and Iyer combined for a 149-run partnership for the fourth wicket.
The day could have belonged to Bangladesh entirely had they not put down the chances offered by both Pujara and Iyer at various points.
Taijul rocked Indian batting line-up after KL Rahul, leading the side in the absence of injured Rohit Sharma, opted to bat first.
Rahul and his fellow opener Shubman Gill had a solid start, putting on 41 before Taijul dismissed the latter for 20.
Gill's premeditated paddle sweep proved to be his downfall as he managed a top-edge that flew to Yasir Ali at leg-slip.
Soon after, Rahul dragged a modest delivery by pacer Khaled Ahmed (1/26) onto his stumps to be bowled for 22.
Taijul struck again, spinning one sharply past Virat Kohli (one) to trap him in front as India lost three wickets for just seven runs.
Kohli reviewed the decision in vain.
Rishabh Pant counter-attacked and it worked well for India as they bounced back to keep Bangladesh at bay.
As Pant played in aggressive fashion, wicket-keeper Nurul Hasan grassed a chance offered by Pujara, who was on 12.
Miraz however, provided Bangladesh some relief, dismissing Pant after he hit half a dozen fours and a couple of sixes for his 46 off 45.
But Iyer and Pujara further troubled Bangladesh on a pitch where balls kept low most of the times.
Iyer also enjoyed some luck as he survived on 67 when Ebadat Hossain dropped a catch at mid-wicket off Miraz.
And later, Ebadat found some movement to hit one of the timber but to his utter dismay, the bails were not dislodged with Iyer on 77.
But Taijul who bowled tirelessly, got the reward, knocking off the stump of Pujara, who was on his way to his 19th century.
Miraz then initiated the following breakthrough, removing Axar Patel on what was the final delivery of the day.
