Top five batting performances from T20 World Cup 2022

Kohli, Hales, Rossouw, Shadab, Phillips came up with the top 5 batting displays

Update : 15 Nov 2022, 02:59 PM

Virat Kohli, Alex Hales and Rilee Rossouw all had different points to prove in the Twenty20 World Cup, and they did it with aplomb. Shadab Khan meanwhile, further enhanced his reputation as a batter, while Glenn Phillips made good use of his powerful frame with the tournament's second hundred. Here is a lookback at five of the most memorable batting performances from the competition:

Virat Kohli 82* against Pakistan at MCG

With questions about his form still swirling around despite a century in the Asia Cup leading up to the T20 World Cup, Kohli silenced his critics once and for all with a stunning innings against arch-rivals Pakistan at Melbourne Cricket Ground.

At a precarious 31/4 chasing 160, India had lost their way until Kohli and Hardik Pandya resurrected the innings with a solid partnership. The required run rate still made India's chase highly improbable, before Kohli's back to back sixes off Haris Rauf changed the course of the game. Particularly the sixer in the fifth ball of the 19th over against Rauf was probably the best shot of the tournament as it sailed over the bowler's head and cleared the huge boundary of MCG. Kohli finished on an unbeaten 53-ball 82 to lead India to a memorable win.

Alex Hales 86* against India at Adelaide Oval

One of the best innings of Hales' eye-catching comeback story in the T20 World Cup was his undefeated 86 against India in the semi-final. England opted to field first as India scored 168 in their 20 overs, which looked a very good total on a used pitch. But opening pair Hales and Jos Buttler went ballistic and reached the target with four overs to spare.

Hales' blistering knock was studded with seven maximums and four fours. He set the tone in the run chase, racing to a 28-ball fifty, and using the shorter boundaries at Adelaide Oval perfectly, drawing from his vast experience of playing in the Big Bash league.

Shadab Khan 52 against South Africa at SCG

All-rounder Shadab's 52-run innings against South Africa was one of the turning points of Pakistan's campaign. Pakistan's semi-final hopes were on a knife edge and they had to win the match to stay alive. At one stage, they were 95/5 in 13 overs when Shadab came out to bat with Pakistan seemingly going nowhere.

But Shadab scored 52 off just 22 balls with three fours and four sixes. Riding on that innings, Pakistan scored a commanding 185 from a struggling situation. Eventually the Proteas capitulated against the Pakistan bowling attack and lost the match by 33 runs in Duckworth/Lewis method. From a pressure situation, Shadab' innings turned the tournament around for Pakistan.

Glenn Phillips 104 against Sri Lanka at SCG

Phillips' stunning century against Sri Lanka at Sydney Cricket Ground was like a one-man show during New Zealand's batting innings. Phillips made a staggering 62% of his team's runs that saw the second hundred of the tournament.

The well-built middle-order batter slammed four sixes and 10 fours to make a 64-ball 104 with the next highest score for the Kiwis 22. Only two batters other than Phillips scored in double digit. Phillips went on and on despite the fall of regular wickets at the other end and eventually the Black Caps scored 167. New Zealand attack then wrapped up the match with brilliant bowling, but it was Phillips' heroics in the first innings that gave them a good total to defend.

Rilee Rossouw 109 against Bangladesh at SCG

Rossouw enjoyed a purple patch in T20 format since his return to South African cricket. In his first outing for the Proteas in this year's T20 World Cup, the left-hander smashed a brilliant hundred against Bangladesh. South Africa were batting first and lost the wicket of captain Temba Bavuma in the very first over. But Rossouw formed a record-breaking partnership with Quinton de Kock (168) and picked up the first century of the tournament, which remains the highest individual score of this edition. The southpaw hammered seven fours and eight sixes in his knock, spraying shots all around the SCG with authority.
