Liton niggle not a concern as Bangladesh brace for day of climax

Proceedings at Adelaide Oval this Sunday will determine whether Bangladesh will extend their stay Down Under

Update : 04 Nov 2022, 07:10 PM

Bangladesh batter Liton Das missed the entire team training session in Adelaide Friday due to a hamstring pull.

The right-handed batter picked up the niggle during Bangladesh's previous game in the ongoing Twenty20 World 2022, against India at the Adelaide Oval last Wednesday.

According to a member of the Bangladesh team management, the matter is not severe and Liton is most likely to be available for the last group game in the tournament, against Pakistan in Adelaide Sunday.

“Liton is doing absolutely fine. He pulled the back of his thigh when he slipped while taking a single in the eighth over of the India game. We are monitoring his situation, but to be honest he is moving around freely without any discomfort. We strongly believe he will be available for Pakistan game,” said the team official requesting anonymity to Dhaka Tribune Friday.

Liton, batting with Nazmul Hossain Shanto at the other end, slipped while taking a single against India after the game resumed following a rain interruption.

The batter was later seen struggling with his running and as it happened, he was run out in the next ball of the same over.

Liton had played a blistering knock of 60 off 27 balls laced with seven boundaries and three over boundaries.

His blazing form with the willow had kept Bangladesh on track chasing 185 runs against India.

However, rain delay saw the momentum shift to India and they eventually won the nail-biter by five runs (Duckworth/Lewis method).

The Bangladesh dugout in the game was unhappy with several decisions from the match officials, including their urgency in resuming the game without giving enough time for the field to dry after heavy showers, and that of the fake throw by Virat Kohli.

As far as Bangladesh's chances of making it to the semi-finals are concerned, the side can still qualify for the next round.

Bangladesh have won two matches, lost two and have four points after as many games.

To qualify for the last four, Bangladesh have no option but to secure a win against Pakistan, but before that hope that the Netherlands defeat South Africa in the day's first game, also at the Adelaide Oval.

Pakistan last Thursday beat South Africa by 33 runs (D/L method).

Following Pakistan's win, India lead Group 2 with six points with all the teams having played four games each.

South Africa are at No 2 in the points table with five points, while Bangladesh and Pakistan have four points each.

Pakistan however, are ahead of Bangladesh in terms of net run rate.

Zimbabwe and the Dutch are at the bottom of the table with three and two points respectively.
