Update : 19 Jun 2022, 10:21 PM

The Bangladesh Cricket Board [BCB] is set to extend helping hand for the flood affected population in the north eastern districts of the country.

BCB chief executive officer Nizamuddin Chowdhury informed the board has already taken initiative to come in support of the people in the region.

“The BCB is always committed to stand for the people of the country in need and during disaster. This will be the same this time too. The board president [Nazmul Hasan] has already instructed us to plan on how we may come in help. The board has already spoken with the concerned board director from Sylhet [Shafiul Alam Chowdhury Nadel who is also Awami League's Organizing Secretary]. He has already spoken to the local authority there and discussed on how the board can contribute. Hopefully you all will be able to see the work soon,” CEO Nizamuddin informed the media on Sunday.

The BCB is also taking initiative to come in help of the families of the cricketers who are now touring West Indies and also those related to Bangladesh cricket. The Bangladesh Test squad in West Indies has two cricketers from the Sylhet region – Ebadot Hossain and Khaled Ahmed.

“We have a few national team cricketers from Sylhet who are currently touring West Indies. We have been instructed to communicate with the families of those cricketers. The families are in touch with our concerned board director [Nadel]. We are already working on how we can come in their support,”

“The support is not limited to the national cricketers only. We are trying to help out everyone who are involved with Bangladesh cricket,” added the CEO.

The flood was triggered on June 15 due to torrential rainfall in the north-eastern districts, and the flash flood in upstream India's Meghalaya and Assam where record-breaking rainfall was recorded.

Out of four districts in Sylhet division – 89 percent area of Sunamganj, 72 percent of Sylhet, 70 percent of Habiganj, and 50 percent of Moulvibazar was submerged. More than 40 lakh people remain marooned in different upazilas and towns while other areas are on the verge of being inundated in the Sylhet division.
