A three-figure opening stand after 61 innings

Tamim, Joy put on 162 for the opening stand

Update : 17 May 2022, 06:50 PM

Tamim Iqbal and Mahmudul Hasan Joy produced a century stand in the opening slot – Bangladesh’s first in Test cricket after more than five years.

The partnership was finally broken in the 49th over of Bangladesh’s innings and the score was 162 then.

They faced 297 deliveries before Joy got out.

Last time Bangladesh openers made a century stand in opening was back in 2017, and that also came against Sri Lanka at Galle.

Soumya Sarkar was Tamim’s opening partner in that innings.

Bangladesh have played 131 Test matches in their history but this is only the eighth time Tigers openers have managed to build a century partnership.

The first ever three-figure opening stand was registered by Javed Omar and Nafees Iqbal, Tamim’s elder brother, against Zimbabwe in 2005.

In all other remaining partnerships though, one name is common; Tamim.

The highest opening partnership in Tigers’ Test history was posted by Tamim and Imrul Kayes against Pakistan in Khulna in 2015.
