Bangladesh picked up their first win in the Under-19 World Cup 2022 beating Canada by eight wickets at Basseterre, St. Kitts on Thursday.

The win will keep the hopes alive for the defending champions who started the tournament with an astounding seven-wicket loss against England in their first match.

After winning the toss Canada got off to a slow but steady start as their openers Anoop Chima and Jash Shah accumulated 30 runs in first ten overs.

But Ripon Mondal, the star of the match, gave the boys in red and green their first break through in the 11th over when he trapped Jash for eight.

Captain Anoop stood strong in one side but wickets were tumbling in other side as his side was reduced to 88-5 in 32nd over.

Anoop eventually got out for 63 off 117 balls to leave his side on 126-8 before Canada were bundled out for 136 in 45th over.

Ripon, the medium pacer, returned with 4-24 bowling 8.3 overs while off-spinner SM Meherob bagged 4-37 bowling full quota of 10 overs.

In reply Bangladesh lost opener Mahfijul Islam for 12 but another opener Iftekhar Hossain and PN Nabil added 76 runs in the second wicket to ease the chase.

Nabil got out for 33 but Iftekhar remained not out with 61 off 89 balls with the aid of seven fours. While Aich Mollah, who ended the match with a six, remained not out on 20.

Bangladesh will play their next match against UAE on Saturday.
