Mohammedan Sporting Club Limited have created a stir in the cricket fraternity, signing big name cricketers for the next Dhaka Premier Division Cricket League season.

The Motijheel-based outfit already had star all-rounder Shakib al Hasan and pacer Taskin Ahmed from last season and have now signed wicketkeeper-batsman Mushfiqur Rahim, Bangladesh T20I captain Mahmudullah, all-rounder Mehedi Hasan Miraz and top-order batsman Soumya Sarkar.

The club revealed the joining of the cricketers through a signing ceremony held Monday.

Inspector General of Police Benazir Ahmed, who is also Mohammedan's development committee chairman, was present during the signing ceremony along with Mohammedan director AGM Sabbir.

“The aim is to play for the championship title. As you can see, me, Mushfiq, Soumya and Taskin are here and Inshallah Shakib will join. Mohammedan have formed a strong team with good players and if we can perform, hopefully become champions. Mohammedan are a big name in domestic cricket and I have previously featured for Mohammedan too. It will be my second year at Mohammedan and hopefully we will be able to give the supporters the gift of becoming champions,” said Mahmudullah, who played Gazi Group Cricketers last season.

Middle-order batsman Mushfiq had played for Abahani Limited last season and echoed similar sentiment to Mahmudullah, which is to win the championship.

“DPL is certainly the number one league and everyone knows the reputation of the tournament and how competitive it is. Mohammedan are certainly one of the top clubs and although they haven't found success in the last few years and this year, they have tried to get a few good players. I feel lucky and honored that they have signed me and we hope to win the championship. While winning is also a matter of luck, I feel that we have the players needed to fight for the championship," Mushfiq said.

The next season of the DPL is slated to take place in May-June next year.

Not only Mohammedan but other premier league clubs are also busy preparing the squad for the upcoming season.

The clubs are being praised for their sincerity and eagerness in forming good teams.

At the same time, the scenario is also raising eyebrows given that the lower division tournaments are yet to hit the field.

Bangladesh Cricket Board had suspended all cricketing activities in the country in March last year due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The sport involving the national team and other top domestic competitions returned gradually to the field, but the lower division leagues are yet to roll on the field.

Cricketers in First, Second and Third division leagues in Dhaka are struggling financially.

Many cricketers in the lower leagues have already given up playing the sport and chose alternate option to earn daily living.
