Naimur: Shakib’s claim unexpected

All-rounder Shakib during a Live session with cricket based website Cricfrenzy.com on Saturday alongside many other controversial statements, questioned on BCB HP Unit's contribution in developing cricketers

Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) High Performance (HP) Unit chairman Naimur Rahman said that the questions raised by Shakib al Hasan regarding the BCB HP department and its effort in betterment of cricket of the country is unexpected.

All-rounder Shakib during a Live session with cricket based website Cricfrenzy.com on Saturday alongside many other controversial statements, questioned about BCB HP Unit's contribution in developing cricketers.

“I am not sure how many players did the BCB HP unit develop in last four-five years. There are many (in the board) who once represented Bangladesh team. But I am not sure what they are working on in the board,” said Shakib during the Live session.

BCB HP unit chairman Naimur following an impromptu meeting at BCB president Nazmul Hasan’s residence involving few directors said, “It is unexpected for me and it should be same for you too. You all know where HP unit was four or five years back and now. There are many U19 cricketers who played for HP and for the national team. That is open for everyone to see.”

“Very recently BCB HP Unit won all matches against Ireland Wolves. So it is surprising to me of him (Shakib) raising questions when the unit is performing well. I am not sure there is something (intention) behind this,” said the former Bangladesh captain.

Shakib, despite being a centrally contracted player, has been one name involved regularly in controversies with the BCB. When quarried if it is the board’s failure for such incidents, Naimur said, “As far as I know a player contracted with the board cannot say against the board. So the board will soon discuss and decide on this in a bigger platform (a board meeting). To be honest this is not a big of an issue for me. Yes, he spoke about HP and I have the list of players we have developed in last four-five years. I can show it (to the media) if needed."

Shakib during the live session also claimed BCB cricket operations chairman Akram Khan has been misinterpreting the cricketer’s decision over playing Indian Premier League and not Test cricket for Bangladesh. Shakib during the interview also questioned doings of some BCB directors and claimed he would be the best BCB president in history if ever given the opportunity.

Left-arm all-rounder Shakib came under heavy criticism for his decision to play the upcoming edition of IPL T20 in April and not the two Tests for Bangladesh against hosts Sri Lanka.

Shakib is set to return to the IPL T20 after a one-year ban with Kolkata Knight Riders signing him for INR 3.2 crores at the auction. Shakib had previously played for the Knight Riders between 2011 and 2017, and was an integral member of their championship winning sides of 2012 and 2014.

Shakib’s appearance in franchise tournament this year is however now in jeopardy following the ongoing controversy. The BCB has decided to rethink on allowing the Bangladesh cricketer to participate in the tournament by skipping Test series against hosts Sri Lanka.
