Windies fail to capitalize good over rate

From the corner of the press box

Update : 05 Feb 2021, 09:37 PM

The ongoing Test match should get praise for a good virtue that is uncommon in most modern day matches - good over rate.

Both the teams deployed spinners as main form of attack, and the batsmen played the patience game on the slow pitch that helped the sides bowl their overs well within the allocated time.

The situation was so good that the West Indies had the surplus of around five overs, as they had to bowl just 10 overs to reach the required minimum level in the last hour of the day.

Although the visitors were trailing by 171 runs in the first innings, they picked up two quick wickets in Bangladesh’s second innings in the second over and put the hosts under pressure.

Shakib al Hasan is unlikely to bat in the innings and Bangladesh were looking to see off the day.

But the Windies failed to take advantage and exert pressure by bowling more overs as the Caribbean side bowled just 10 in the last hour.

Perhaps some urgency to bowl a few more overs could have fetched them one or two more wickets, in the process providing them a chance of a comeback, albeit a slight one.
