Sheikh Jamal’s chase is the highest in List A matches in Bangladesh. Despite the loss, Mohammedan clinched sixth spot, and a place in the Super Six, as they have a better head-to-head than Legends of Rupganj.
At the BKSP 4 ground, Kalabagan Krira Chakra defeated Khelaghar Samaj Kalyan Samity by five wickets to lift themselves to safety with eight points. Khelaghar now have to play the relegation league along with Partex Sporting Club and Victoria Sporting Club. Khelaghar however, have a slight advantage as they finished the first round with six points while both Partex and Victoria have only two points each. So only one win from two matches in the relegation league will make sure Khelaghar's spot in the premier league next season.
The Super League phase will start either Wednesday or Thursday.Sk Jamal v Mohammedan The match was really important in that three teams - Mohammedan, Sheikh Jamal and Rupganj - were in contention for the Super Six stage with 12 points each. Mohammedan started their innings aggressively and scored a commanding 339 losing five wickets in their stipulated 50 overs. Opening batsman Shamsur Rahman made an unbeaten 144 off 152 balls, carrying the bat through the innings. He smashed seven fours and as many sixes during his innings. No 3 batsman Rony Talukdar also scored a brilliant century, 110 off 99 balls with 10 boundaries and three over boundaries, to help the famous Black and Whites to an imposing total.
Scoring 300-plus should have taken Mohammedan to the Super Six but Sheikh Jamal had other ideas. Sheikh Jamal started their innings with the right approach as openers Fazle Mahmud and Prashant Chopra added 58 runs in the first seven overs.
Left-arm spinner Taijul Islam then made a double blow for Mohammedan in the seventh over.
But Chopra and all-rounder Sohag Gazi built a 96-run partnership for the third wicket to keep Sheikh Jamal in the hunt. Chopra got out after scoring 86 off 60 balls. Mohammedan then took two important wickets – the veteran Rajin Saleh and all-rounder Ziaur Rahman – in quick succession.
All-rounder Tanbir Hayder formed a vital 87-run partnership alongside lower-order batsman Elias Sunny for the seventh wicket. With that said, Sheikh Jamal soon lost three wickets quickly as the match was hanging in the balance. They lost their ninth wicket with just 12 runs still needed.
Sunny (39 not out) though was calm and composed at the other end and steered his side to a memorable victory alongside No 11 Shahadat Hossain (nine not out).
